Even though People in Nepal have had the notion of education and its importance for a long, the modern education system adopted across the globe was not available in Nepal until 1918. The first higher educational institution, Tri-Chandra College was officially inaugurated. Slowly with globalization, Nepal understood the importance of modern education. In this article, we will discuss the list of universities in Nepal.
Currently, there are ten universities in Nepal. . Established in 1959 Tribhuvan University (TU) is the first and oldest university in Nepal. On the basis of a number of enrolments, TU stands to be the largest university in Nepal. And the tenth largest university in the world. Mahendra Sanskrit University was established in December 1986 which is the second university. Standing third in the list Kathmandu University was officially opened in 1990. Similarly, Purbanchal (1995) and Pokhara university (1996) comes third and fourth in the List.

With more than 3000 undergraduate programs and 2000 graduate programs Tribhuvan university offers a huge range of programmes and courses. he university has 60 constituent campuses and 1,084 affiliated colleges across the country as of March 2017.

Formerly known as Mahendra Sanskrit University, Nepal Sanskrit University is located at Belijhundi, Dang 13 km from headquarter Ghorahi. Established in 1986 this university offers Intermediate or Uttar Madhyama, Bachelor or Shastri, Masters or Acharya and Doctoral courses in classical and modern subjects. The university has 12 constituent and 13 affiliated Vidhyapithas (campuses) around the country.
They offer their students with degree and non degree research works based on sanskrit language and it also organizes program on vedic and buddhist teachings. The affilated Universities of NSU are :

Kathmandu university is a public university in Nepal which is also one of the oldest(third) universities in Nepal. It is located in Dhulikhel of kavreplanchowk District and it was established in 1991 with the motto of "Quality Education for Leadership". KU operates 7 schools and campuses in dhulikhel, Patan, Lalitpur and Bhaktrapur. This university offers undergraduate, graduate and post graduate courses in different fields. Pokhara University also know as PU or PoU is Nepal's Fifth University which was established in 1997 and its central office is located in Pokhara Lekhnath municipality. PU was formed as a part of government policy for inproved access to higher education, thus the prime minister is the university chancellor and the minister of education is the pro-chancellor. School of Engineering, School of Health & Allied Sciences, The School of Business and The School of Development and Social Engineering are located on the bank of the river named Khudi.

The Agricultural and Forestry University(AFU) is also a public university based on agriculture and its head office is located in Rampur, Chitwan. This university was created through the parliament of Nepal in june 2010 while merging two constituent campuses of Tribhuvan University. The university offers agricultural workforce development and promotes research in agriculture, forestry, and allied disciplines through teaching, research, and extension programs across the country. AFU offers undergraduate, graduate and PhD programs in agricultural sciences

Purbanchal University is also a public university from biratnagar and it was established in 1993 by the government of Nepal with its fundamental objective of preserving, refining, inventing, adopting, extending and transmitting knowledge. Purbanchal University conducts its academic programs through its five constituent campuses as well as more than 123 affiliate colleges.

Lumbini Buddhist University is a tertiary educational institution in Lumbini,Nepal, the Birthplace of Gautam Buddha. The idea behind the establishment of this university was conceived from the first world budhist summit held in 1998 and shortly after in 2004 the university was established. in this university they offer four year courses for a bachelor in Buddhism as well as MA and PhD courses.

Far-Western University is a University in Nepal located in Mahendranagar,Kancganpur and it was established with the mission to develop students through the construction and application of knowledge, research and Scholarship and advancement of science and technology. Mid western University is a state run university in Surkhet, the regional headquaters of karnali province of Nepal. This university was established in 2009 in birendranagar by the government as the plan to establish regional universities was proposed.
