Rana prime minister Chandra Shumsher had provided a great support to Britain during the world war I. About 1 lakh trained Nepalese youth had participated in this war. The Nepalese youth were divided into groups to fight against Germany. Nepalese youth would be in the first row in the war front. When the Gorkhas with Khukuri on their waist and rifle in their hand would go near the Germans, they would start to panic. The bravery and gallantry of the Gorkhas had been world famous. Even German emperor Kaiser William II had said " I can send my army to fight against any troops of the world but my heart shivers when i hear the name of Gorkhali soldiers". Britain was much pleased with Nepal for the support in the war. Britain promised to provide the grant of 1 million rupees every year. Many Nepalese were honored with the reputed Victoria cross and military cross. The Nepalese youths also got the title of brave Gorkhas.
