Birta abolition
The legal provision in which the government could not distribute land in the name of person is called Birta abolition.
Need of it at that time
The act of distributing land to an individual as salary, donation, present or reward is called birta. There was the Birta system during the Malla, Shah and Rana rule in the country. Civil servant, army, Brahmin and the priests would receive birta from either the king or the prime minister.
The reasons of need of birta at that time
- There was lack of money to provide salary or donation.
- The area of land was comparatively more than the population., The concept of birta must have come for the utilization of land for agricultural purposes.
- The development of religious norms must have worked that if Brahmins are donated, god will be pleased.
The system of birta was abolished during premiership of BP Koirala. It is known as Birta abolition.
