Stratosphere layer of the earth is called the ozone layer because its major component is ozone which is a special type of oxygen containing three oxygen atoms i.e. O3 .
The stratosphere is approximately 15 to 35 km from above earth's surface because it contains high concentrations of ozone molecules and approximately 90% of the atmosphere's ozone occur in the stratosphere.
