The mechanism of formation of the plug like structure at the injuries to prevent loss of blood is called coagulation. It stops bleeding and prevents loss of vital body fluid and also prevents pathogens from entering the body from wounds in skin.
Hemostasis or blood coagulation includes three steps that occur in a rapid sequence: (1) vascular spasm, or vasoconstriction, a brief and intense contraction of blood vessels; (2) formation of a platelet plug; and (3) blood clotting or coagulation.Blood clots can also cause heart attack or stroke. Blood clots do go away on their own, as the body naturally breaks down and absorbs the clot over weeks to months. Depending on the location of the blood clot, it can be dangerous and you may need treatment.
