Meteor disappears before reaching the earth's surface because when it enters into the earth's atmosphere friction acts into play with air and starts to burn externally. This finishes within the atmosphere and cannot reach on the earth surface.
When a meteor comes crashing towards earth, the high pressure air makes cracks and causes the body of the meteor to fall apart or explode. Most of the meteors are quite small and the light we see and coming from burning up of debris.
