Role of Political parties in democracy

What roles should political parties play in democracy? Explain.

Each political party should attempt to apply wishes and wants of people into practice. In broader sense political parties should play the following roles:

  1. Establishment and control of government: In multi-party system, the political party with majority or a party with highest seats in collaboration with other parties should form a competent government. The opposition party should make people aware of existing political scenario and control the government by checking its flaws.
  2. Bridge between government and people: Political parties should act as a bridge between government and people. They should aware the people, organize them and make government aware of its duty.
  3. Presentation issues: Each political party contains its own ideology it abides the cadres and becomes a ground for its comparison with other political parties. Based on the ideology political parties also put forward various issues on people. The political parties should play an active role to encourage people to follow the path for better ideology.
  4. Means of modernization: In the transitional period of politics, political parties should act as the means of modernization. They should minimize and eliminate the existing religious riot, racial clash and cultural conflict to maintain harmony, tolerance and unity. Moreover, political parties should foster people to embarrass the proper direction of modernization.
  5. Revolution: Political parties should revolt against the existing government to retain the coveted government of the people. Sometimes political parties can use its organizational means to change overall political structure of the country. In case of foreign interference, political parties should oppose and revolt collectively. During the revolution, political parties must use peaceful measures like making bonafire, burning effigies, shouting slogans, demonstrating processions, etc. as far as practicable.
