What do you mean by primary and secondary sources of energy?

1 Answer

Those sources through which energy can be produced are called energy sources. They are of two types:

  • Primary energy sources ( eg : solar energy, crude oil energy)
  • Secondary energy source ( eg : Petrol biogas, which can be used in the same form in which they occur in nature are called primary energy sources and those sources of energy which are derived from the primary energy sources are called secondary energy  sources.

Primary energy sources take many forms, including nuclear energy, fossil energy -- like oil, coal and natural gas -- and renewable sources like wind, solar, geothermal and hydropower.Coal, natural gas, and petroleum formed over thousands of years from the buried remains of ancient sea plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. That is why we also call those energy sources fossil fuels. The 2 primary sources of energy that power living systems are photosynthesis and chemosynthesis.

Electricity is a secondary energy source: The electricity that we use is a secondary energy source because it is produced by converting primary sources of energy such as coal, natural gas, nuclear energy, solar energy, and wind energy, into electrical power.
