Differentiate between filament lamp and fluorescent lamp.

1 Answer

The difference between filament lamp and fluorescent lamp are :

  Filament lamp Fluorescent lamp
1. Filament lamp converts 10% of electrical energy into light and 90% into heat energy.  Fluorescent lamp converts 30% of electrical energy into light energy and 70% electrical energy into heat energy.
2. Its lifespan is 1000 hours Its lifespan is 3000 hrs
3. It is filled with inert gases or N2 It is filled with mercury vapor.

The biggest difference between the two is in how they produce light. Incandescent bulbs produce light by a heating a metallic filament until it starts to radiate light. On the other hand, fluorescent lamps produce light by exciting a gas and causing it to glow. When it comes to a traditional incandescent light bulb, electricity runs through a wire inside the bulb and heats it up. ... A fluorescent light bulb uses gas inside the bulb to light up: when electricity runs through it, it excites a mixture of gases, which are transformed into light.

The phosphor fluoresces to produce light. A fluorescent bulb produces less heat, so it is much more efficient. ... This makes fluorescent bulbs four to six times more efficient than incandescent bulbs. That's why you can buy a 15-watt fluorescent bulb that produces the same amount of light as a 60-watt incandescent bulb.

A filament lamp is a common type of light bulb. It contains a thin coil of wire called the filament. This heats up when an electric current passes through it, and produces light as a result. The resistance of a lamp increases as the temperature of its filament increases.
