An iceberg 50*30*20 floats in water. The density of ice 900 and water 1000 kg/m^3. calculate mass of water displaced and portion of iceberg.

1 Answer

Given ,

volume of iceberg vo = (50 * 30 * 20 )cm3

= (0.5 * 0.3 * 0.2 ) m 3

= 0.03 m3

density of ice do = 900

density of water dl = 1000

now for flotation of ice  we know the formula,

vo do g = vl dl g

vl = 27 / 1000

vl = 0.027 m

Here the volume of iceberg inside water = volume of liquid displaced vl

= 0.027 m

so the fraction of ice berg in the water must be 0.027/ 0.03 = 9/10

Also fraction of ice inside water surface = 1 -9/10

=1/10

Again, mass of the water displaced = vl * dl = 0.027 * 1000

= 27 kg

hence, mass of water displaced is 27 kg and portion of ice above water surface is 1/10 th of total volume of iceberg.
