The great festival of Hindu are many. My favorite is Dashain, the great festival of Hindus. It is celebrated usually in September. During the month of karthik in Nepali calendar, Nepalese people indulge in the biggest festival of the year. Dashain is considered to be longest and most auspicious festival in the year. Fifteen days of celebration occurs during this period. Through out the kingdom of Nepal goddess Durga in all her manifestation are worshipped with innumerable pujas, abundant offerings and thousands of animal sacrifice for the ritual of holy bathing thusdrenching the goddess for days in blood. 

According to our legendary book, Ramayan, it is the Ram victory over Rawan. Rawan was the ten headed demon, king of Lanka. The first day is Ghatasthapana. People saw jamara of maize for 9 days. It is called Navaratri. The seventh day is fulpati. Flowers are carried from Gorkha Durbar to Hanuman Dhoka in relays in one day. The eighth day is Mahasthami and ninth day is Mahanawami. On these days people sacrifice goats, pigs, buffaloes, ducks, sheep at their homes. They do so to please the goddesses. Thee tenth day is Bijaya Dashami. Juniors go to their elders and they give blessings of long life and tika on their foreheads and jamara in their heads. 

The importance of dashain lies in  the fact that on this day family members from far and near all gather in ne place together. Even people who are in different country and different time zones of the world come home for Dashain. The house with the eldest member ofthe family receive realatives from far and near to get tika and blessings. The function of putting tika and jamara continues for 4 days of rushing around and meeting all your relatives. The festival of Dashain ends on the full moon day.
