Tourism is a business activity connected with providing accommodation, services, and entertainment for people who are visiting a place for pleasure as well as change of schedule. In Nepal, tourism has become a growing trade for over a century now. Since Nepal is a good destination place for tourists, it has great prospects in the future. At the same time, it has many hurdles too.

Nepal is a resourceful, naturally diverse, and beautiful country. This brings a great opportunity for the tourism and hospitality industry here in Nepal. The highest peak of the world, Mt Everest and other major Himalayas, Nepal's green forests, lakes, ponds, and ever-flowing rivers can easily lure the largest population of tourists towards Nepal.

The second scope is Nepal has many historical places like Lumbini, the birthplace of Gautam Buddha, Pashupatinath Temple, Arun valley, and Janakpur Dham attract tourists easily. Similarly, Nepal is culturally diverse. Foreigners have a large exposure to different cultures. For example, a tourist enjoys the "Tharu" culture at Chitwan while gets the pleasure of the "Maroni" dance in Pokhara. Moreover, the people in Nepal show good hospitality. The fourth prospect is that we have democratic politics. A flexible legal system and freedom have thus become another scope for tourism. Still, the tourism industry has a lot of challenges too.

The first of the challenges is infrastructure development. We have really poor roads and no railway at all. Flights are not safe and don't operate in most tourist destinations. So, the construction of roads and hotels is a challenge to attract tourists. Next, we don't have a good security system. Crimes and robberies have created a threat to the tourism industry. Impunity and lawlessness have become our challenges. The third obstacle is publicity. Natural and cultural heritages are not recognized in the international arena yet. Still, we need to make a great effort to reap benefits from the tourism industry.

To exploit the possibilities of the tourism industry in Nepal, we need a clear roadmap. The government should work on infrastructure developments like roads and hotels. We need to create a conducive environment for tourists by ensuring a democratic policy and rule of law. Good publicity of our cultural sites and natural places can boost up tourism in Nepal. Moreover, the government should enforce a tourism-friendly policy by not compromising the national interest and sovereignty of Nepal.
