The heart is located in the thoracic cavity in between two lungs. The heart sends the impure blood for purification to concerned organ and distributes pure blood through out the body. The purification of blood takes place in the lungs.
The four main functions of the heart are:
- Pumping oxygenated blood to the other body parts.
- Pumping hormones and other vital substances to different parts of the body.
- Receiving deoxygenated blood and carrying metabolic waste products from the body and pumping it to the lungs for oxygenation.
- Maintaining blood pressure.
Your heart is about the size of your clenched fist. It lies in the front and middle of your chest, behind and slightly to the left of your breastbone. It is a muscle that pumps blood to all parts of your body to provide it with the oxygen and nutrients in needs to function.
