What is coal and how does it form?
1 Answer
Coal is a black or brown substance formed from the plant fossils deposited inside the earth crust in the sedimentary layer of rocks.
It is considered that the dead bodies of plant (coal plant) when protected by the layers of sand or mud started to go deep inside the earth's crust. Bacteria and geothermal energy changed some parts of the wood to gases and escaped out. The remains black mixture undergo changes due to pressure with release of liquid leaving behind a pasty mass which slowly can harden into coal. In this way coal forms inside the earth.
