It is also called the EMP pathway because its details were given by Emdben, Meyerhof, and Paranas. It is a stepped process by which one molecule of glucose breaks into two molecules of pyruvic acid. it occurs in the cytoplasm and is common to both aerobic and anaerobic respiration. The steps are illustrated in the following diagram.
