There are two types of sex glands, testes in male and ovaries in female. Testes produces male sex hormone called testosterone which controls the development of secondary sexual characteristics in male.
Similarly, ovary produces female sex hormones known as estrogen and progesterone which control the development of female sex organs and female features. It also plays an important role in ovulation and helps in pregnancy.
Testosterone function in detail: regulate sex drive (libido), bone mass, fat distribution, muscle mass and strength, and the production of red blood cells and sperm. A small amount of circulating testosterone is converted to estradiol, a form of estrogen in the body.
Estrogen and progesterone function in detail: Estrogens are responsible for maturation and maintenance of the vagina and uterus, maturation of ovarian follicles, regulation of gonadotropin secretion. Progesterone are responsible for preparing the endometrium for the potential of pregnancy, thicken inner lining of uterus to accept a fertilized egg, prohibiting the muscle contractions in the uterus that would cause the body to reject an egg.
