 Margaret Floy Washburn became the first woman to earn her doctoral degree in American Psychology, and subsequently became one of the most influential psychologists of her time. She was introduced to the new field of psychology. When she graduated college in 1891, Washburn wanted to study with James McKeen Cattell in his psychological laboratory, located at Columbia University.
