Chitwan is one of 77 districts of Nepal, and is located in the southwestern part of Bagmati Pradesh with Bharatpur, the fourth largest city of Nepal, as its district headquarter. It covers an area of 2,238.39 km2 (864.25 sq mi), and in 2011 had a population of 579,984 (279,087 male and 300,897 female) people. Chitwan lies in terai region of Nepal.
Bharatpur is one of the fastest-growing cities in Nepal. It lies on the southern bank of the Narayani River and serves as a commercial center of the Chitwan district and the central region of Nepal commercial and service its major destination for higher education, health care and transportation in the region. Most of the shopping area lies in the district of Narayangadh, while government offices, hospitals and colleges are situated in other parts of the city, including Nepal's premier cancer hospital, B.P Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital.
