A hybrid bee created to boost resilience, honey production and resistance to heat, invaded what country in the Americas first?
Brazil
Panama
Peru
Uruguay
Option A
The hybrid was between the relatively gentle and domesticated western bee, Apis mellifera, with bees from southern Africa in order to achieve a bee which would survive better in South American heat and produce more honey. The resulting hybrid was introduced under controlled conditions in the 1950s and proved not only very successful but also aggressive. In 1957 26 queens and their swarms escaped; the bees, nicknamed "killer bees", spread swiftly and dominated not only in South and Central America but also invaded southern USA and, by 2017, as far north as Utah.
