A legislature is a deliberative assembly with the authority to make laws for a political entity such as a country or city.
The function of Legislature
- Formulation of law
There are people elected representatives in the legislature. The main function of these people's representatives is to make law for the nation. Therefore the legislature performs the task of making law according to wills of the people and the need of the nation. It makes law by passing the bill with majority. - Constitution Amending Function
Some provisions mentioned in the constitution need to be changed according to their demand of people and need of time. power to amend the constitution is given to the parliament in the countries like Canada, India, Nepal, etc. According to the constitution of Nepal- 2072, the support of 2/3 majority of the members is required to amend constitution. - Administrative Function
Legislature forms the government, controls it, criticizes it and even dissolve the government by passing the 'Proposal of No Confidence'. Such power of legislature is called Administrative Function. - Financial Function
Another important function of the legislature is to approve the annual budget and many other financial policies made by the government. It also permits the government to implement the new tax policy collect revenue and borrow foreign loan.
