In the laboratory, hydrogen gas is prepared by the reaction of Hydrochloric with zinc granules in a 500 ml flask.
To this, dilute or dilute sulphuric acid is added through a thistle funnel.
Dihydrogen gas is released and the gas is collected by the downward displacement of water because it is a gas lighter than water

Chemical Reaction:
Zn(s)+2HCl(aq)→ZnCl2(aq)+H2(g)
Zn(s)+H2SO4(aq)→ZnSO4(aq)+H2(g).

Materials Needed

  • hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid)
  • 500 ml flask.
  • zinc granules (or iron filings or strips of aluminum)
Hydrogen gas bubbles will be released as soon as the acid and zinc are mixed. Be very careful to avoid contact with the acid. Also, heat will be given off by this reaction.
