Why it is important for gametes to have half the number of chromosomes compared to the mother cell ?

Any organism result due to the fusion of male and female gametes during sexual reproduction. During fertilization  the chromosomes of male and female gametes are added up in the offspring. In order to maintain the number of chromosomes from generation to generation in a species it is necessary  for gametes are added ti half of the number of chromosomes. If number of chromosomes would double in each generation.
