Notes on Gravitational Force for Class 10 (SEE)

Note: Gravitation

Gravitation (Gravitational Force)

The force of attraction between any two bodies in the universe due to their masses is called gravitation or gravitational force.

Newton’s law of Gravitation

Newton’s law of gravitation states that” Every object in the universe attracts another object with gravitation which is directly proportional to the product of masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their center”.

Mathematically, \(F=\frac{GMm}{r^2}\)
Prove Newton's Law of Gravitation, \(F=\frac{GMm}{r^2}\)

Let us consider two bodies A and B having masses m1 and m2 respectively and ‘d’ be the distance between their center. Then according to Newton’s law of gravitation,

Gravitation is directly proportional to product of two masses

                                    F ∝ m1 X m2  …………….(i)

Gravitation is inversely proportional to square of distance between their centre.

\(F\propto\frac1d\)
